During this photography workshop, you’ll learn how to unleash the potential of your flashgun off camera on location, with the use of a model. The workshop will involve outdoor and indoor practical sessions. In a practical and creative environment, you’ll have the opportunity to learn from the best at City Academy. Our classes are limited to small groups so you can learn in a fast paced setting and gain confidence in this area. Once you’ve mastered one speedlite, you’ll be able to move on to two and even three or more, to create dramatic images worthy of a professional portfolio. New to photography? Before attending this course you will need a basic knowledge of aperture, camera lenses, shutter speed and ISO including exposure modes. If you’re new to photography, then you may find it helpful to sign up to one of our Beginner Courses first. Speedlite Essentials Get to know the key features of a speedlite, including power, settings, capacity and exposure modes. Flashguns & Models Explore different brands, models and types of speedlites to understand what each one can offer. Camera Settings Build confidence with your manual camera settings, including light meters and metering modes. Speedlite Accessories Learn how to use shapers, modifiers, triggers and stands to control and shape your lighting. Budget Lighting Solutions Discover how to create your own DIY shapers and modifiers using simple, affordable materials. Working with Models Develop your skills in composition, posing, communication and direction when photographing people. Lighting Styles Explore different speedlite setups and creative lighting styles, including low key and high key photography. Step outside and you are surrounded by brilliant shoot locations, from the Southbank, Leake Street Arches and Lower Marsh Market to Waterloo Bridge, the Thames riverside and the bold architecture of the National Theatre. It is an ideal setting for exploring studio lighting, portraiture, street photography, architecture, composition and natural light, with the city providing a constantly changing backdrop for your work. Do I need my own camera? This course requires a mirrorless camera, a DSLR camera or a compact camera with full manual controls. If you own a tripod, please bring it. If you do not have access to either, we can provide you with a camera and tripod. We also recommend you bring the following equipment with you to the course: If you own a speedlite, please bring it with you - but this is not necessary, your camera’s manual, fully charged battery, an empty memory card, comfortable shoes, external flash (for some classes, if owned) Get involved If you want to get to know other students, read tips and tricks from industry professionals, and get your own work reposted, follow the City Academy Photography Instagram.
