Flamenco guitar is one of the most exciting and vibrant styles of guitar. At City Academy, we offer an in-depth beginners course where you’ll learn the essential skills required to play a full range of solo flamenco guitar styles. Our tutors are industry experts, and place great emphasis on the deep roots and the evolving musical language of Flamenco. This course is suitable for those with some guitar experience already. If you are completely new to guitar playing, try our popular Guitar for Beginners course.

WHAT WILL BE TAUGHT ON THIS GUITAR COURSE?

The course has been designed to give you a solid introduction to flamenco guitar playing. Course content will include:

  • Understanding the fundamentals of classic and contemporary Flamenco guitar styles
  • Gaining an understanding of a wide range of techniques such as arpeggiated chords
  • Discovering some of the most common rasgueados (finger strumming techniques)
  • Learning how to play picado, an iconic technique giving Flamenco its particular flavour
  • Gaining a better understanding of scales, theory, and chords as well as different Flamenco palos

What to bring: guitar, pen, notebook, water

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND LEVEL OF THIS COURSE?

Students will need to know the basic chords; C, G, D, E, A, Am, Em, Dm and confidently change between them. Students should also have some basic experience with reading tabs or music.

For this course, you will need to bring an acoustic guitar and ideally a phone or alternative recording device to help you track your learning.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

The courses are taught within groups where you will work on an ensemble piece as well as receiving individual feedback.

BY THE END OF THE COURSE, WHAT WILL I HAVE ACHIEVED?

Students will have:

  • Learnt at least 3 different 'palos' (styles)
  • Developed full knowledge of both left and right hand techniques
  • Grasped a greater understanding of the complexity of all types of guitar music through the Flamenco technique

AFTER I COMPLETE THIS COURSE, WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS IN MY TRAINING?

Students may wish to repeat a Level 2 guitar course or attend a City Academy Open Mic event to put their skills into practice.
