Our Writing for Children's Books Courses encourages you to explore and analyse some of the most successful children’s books, as you start to create your own original children's story.

You'll look closely at picture books for children under five, learn character development and plot writing principles to help form convincing chapter books and novels for older children. Like all of our writing courses, the class atmosphere is one of idea sharing and confidence boosting, as you craft your own style and work through a series of practical writing exercises to get your creative juices flowing.

By the end of the lesson you will have progressed to building a clear outline that you can nurture into your own unique story.

WRITING FOR CHILDREN'S BOOKS COURSE CONTENT

• Writing exercises to build confidence through discussion and group work.
• Exploring popular narratives from well-loved books such as The Gruffalo, Dear Zoo, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Jolly Postman, Harry Potter and The Hunger Games.
• Identifying the best ways to blend words and pictures.
• Developing your own story and creating characters, applying time tested principles.
• Understanding your age range.
• Sharing ideas and preparation to write a complete children's book.

THINGS TO NOTE:

To prepare for our children's book writing course, it will be very helpful to bring along one or more children’s books that you admire, or even one you were disappointed by. As long as it’s a book that created a reaction, it’ll be a useful discussion point for your group.

It doesn’t matter if you haven’t done any creative writing before, but students should have a good level of written English as the course won’t focus on grammar or vocabulary.

The writing skills you’ll learn are useful for aspiring writers of children’s books. Our one-day course is also generally helpful in improving analytical and communication skills, and increasing your confidence.

Like all of our writing courses, you’ll receive friendly, constructive feedback from your teacher throughout the course. The opportunity to discuss and share your ideas with a group of fellow writers can be an incredibly useful part of the creative process, helping you develop the style and scope of your writing.
