Sitcom Writing Beginners

Our Sitcom Writing Beginners course is a practical introduction to writing situation comedy, designed for adults who want to understand how memorable sitcoms are built.

Across the course, you will explore what makes sitcoms funny, why great comic characters keep audiences watching and how everyday situations can become strong comedy stories.

Working with an experienced writing tutor, you will watch and discuss sitcom extracts, experiment with your own ideas and begin developing characters, dialogue and storylines in a supportive group setting.

Please note that fluency in English is essential for this course. If you have any special requirements please inform our Student Services Team prior to your course start date.

Explore what makes a successful sitcom

Create memorable central characters, antagonists, and sitcom “families”

Analyse themes such as work, rest, play, conflict, secrets, and misunderstandings

Examine character choices and comic archetypes

Understand audience expectations in comedy

Challenge common misconceptions about sitcom writing and exploring the value of flawed characters

Find your comedic voice and use this to craft funny, believable characters

City Academy tutors are experienced artists and performers that work in the industry. If your tutor's availability changes at short notice, our team will arrange for a suitable replacement and notify you in advance.

CANCELLATIONS POLICY

We offer a full refund or full credit of your original course if you cancel at least 72 hours before the start of your booking.

We cannot offer any refund if you cancel less than 72 hours before the start of your booking, or if you do not attend.
