Our Ballroom Dance Taster Class is the perfect starting place to experience a variety of dance styles and get hooked on Ballroom. In just this short class you’ll be introduced to one Standard (eg. Foxtrot, Tango or Waltz) and one Latin dance, learning simple steps and experiencing the joy of dancing with others. Already ready to start learning? You can join straight into our Beginners Ballroom Dance Course, where you’ll build your skills week by week and learn full dance routines in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. No partner is required, just bring yourself and a willingness to try something new. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN In your Ballroom Dance Taster Class, you will: Enjoy a Standard Ballroom dance routine - either Foxtrot, Waltz or Tango. Experience a short Latin Ballroom routine. Gain confidence dancing in a sociable, friendly environment. Be led by an expert choreographer and tutor Have the chance to ask questions about progressing to our Beginners Ballroom Dance Course. A City Academy Taster class is a one-off, introductory session where you can try both Standard and Latin ballroom dances, meet our tutors, and get a feel for our teaching style. No commitment, no pressure. What are the benefits of taking a taster before joining a course? A taster helps you see if ballroom dancing is right for you. You’ll get a hands-on experience of different dance styles, build your confidence, and meet others with the same interest — all before committing to the full Ballroom Beginners Course. Do I need any dance experience or a partner? No experience is required, and you don’t need a partner — our classes are designed to be inclusive, friendly, and easy to follow for complete beginners. What happens if I enjoy the taster? If you enjoy your session, you can continue into our Beginners Ballroom Dance Course. This structured programme will help you develop your technique, musicality, and partner skills over several weeks, learning popular ballroom and Latin dances in more detail. What Is a Leader The leader is the dancer who gently shows where the movement will go. They give clear signals—using their hands, body, and timing—to invite the other dancer to move in a certain way. What Is a Follower The follower is the dancer who listens to those signals and responds with their own movement. They don’t guess—they feel the leader’s guidance and move with them, in the same rhythm and direction. They pay close attention to touch and timing. They follow smoothly, adding their own energy and style. They move with control, not just being led—they dance back. A good follower is not passive—they are active, expressive, and always ready. Can the Roles Change? Yes! Anyone can be a leader or a follower. Some people learn both. It doesn’t depend on gender—just on who wants to guide and who wants to respond in the moment.
