No matter how nervous you feel on your first night, by the end of the course you'll be Salsa dancing with style. You will learn essential Salsa steps, in a relaxed and enjoyable environment, building your moves into more complex combinations. You'll experience rotating partners, work on confidence and performance technique, whilst being challenged (just enough) to push yourself further. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A LEADER AND A FOLLOWER What Is a Leader The leader is the dancer who gently shows where the movement will go. They give clear signals—using their hands, body, and timing—to invite the other dancer to move in a certain way. They start the dance. They decide when to step, turn, or change direction. They use body movement (not words) to guide the partner. A good leader doesn’t force or drag—they move clearly and with care, like saying, “Let’s go this way together.” What Is a Follower The follower is the dancer who listens to those signals and responds with their own movement. They don’t guess—they feel the leader’s guidance and move with them, in the same rhythm and direction. They pay close attention to touch and timing. They follow smoothly, adding their own energy and style. They move with control, not just being led—they dance back. A good follower is not passive—they are active, expressive, and always ready. Can the Roles Change? Yes! Anyone can be a leader or a follower. Some people learn both. It doesn’t depend on gender—just on who wants to guide and who wants to respond in the moment. In social dancing, partners sometimes even switch roles during the same song. SALSA CLASSES FOR BEGINNERS CONTENT Exact content may differ depending on class size and course duration, but topics generally covered include: Understand the fundamentals of salsa music and rhythm Learn the basic steps, such as side step, right and left turn and cross body lead, and practice through combinations Work on your confidence, in both yourself and in your movement, introduction to shines and more Learn about posture of Salsa through warm-up, footwork, partner work and combinations Become familiar with the Salsa dance community and attend Salsa night out You'll receive friendly feedback throughout, and you don’t have to bring a partner to join the course. Please bring suitable footwear, with a smooth sole, to the course. Trainers are not suitable for salsa classes. 🎓 MASTER THE BASIC STEPS Start with the foundational movements: side step, right and left turn, and cross body lead. These core steps will be practised in simple combinations to build muscle memory and flow. ⚙️ BUILD CONFIDENCE AND STYLE Develop trust in your movement and posture. Learn simple solo steps (“shines”) that give you freedom on the dance floor and help express your personality. 🙂 POSTURE AND PARTNER WORK Get to know the vibrant salsa community—meet new people, build connections, and take your first steps into a social salsa night out in a supportive, welcoming setting. 🔀 JOIN THE COMMUNITY Easy to configure and customize for any use case. UNDERSTANDING OUR SALSA & BACHATA CURRICULUM Salsa and bachata are beautifully rich dances, full of technique, musicality, and finesse and like any true art form, they take time to develop and refine. Each course within our curriculum is designed to be repeated, often more than once. You’ll work closely alongside your peers and your tutor, who will guide you in mastering every element of the material. When you’re ready, you’ll receive a sign-off to progress to the next level, ensuring a solid and confident foundation at every stage. To support your learning, our bi-monthly afternoon Salsa Social is a friendly, welcoming, and safe space where you can practise what you’ve learned in class, build confidence on the dance floor, and most importantly, have fun. Think of salsa as a marathon, not a sprint. There’s no rush, the joy is in the journey, slow and steady, with lots of smiles along the way. Our role is to guide you and inspire you.
