On this course, you’ll learn a range of techniques while having the chance to inject your own personality and natural creativity into your movement combinations. Salsa - Improvers is split into two levels; you need to complete Salsa - Improvers 1 before you can shimmy your way to Salsa - Improvers 2. This ensures everyone progresses properly – and gives you the opportunity to build total confidence in your moves. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A LEADER AND A FOLLOWER What Is a Leader The leader is the dancer who gently shows where the movement will go. They give clear signals—using their hands, body, and timing—to invite the other dancer to move in a certain way. They start the dance. They decide when to step, turn, or change direction. They use body movement (not words) to guide the partner. A good leader doesn’t force or drag—they move clearly and with care, like saying, “Let’s go this way together.” What Is a Follower The follower is the dancer who listens to those signals and responds with their own movement. They don’t guess—they feel the leader’s guidance and move with them, in the same rhythm and direction. They pay close attention to touch and timing. They follow smoothly, adding their own energy and style. They move with control, not just being led—they dance back. A good follower is not passive—they are active, expressive, and always ready. Can the Roles Change? Yes! Anyone can be a leader or a follower. Some people learn both. It doesn’t depend on gender—just on who wants to guide and who wants to respond in the moment. In social dancing, partners sometimes even switch roles during the same song. SALSA IMPROVERS 1 CLASSES CONTENT Completion of our Beginners Salsa Class or equivalent experience of Salsa is a minimum requirement for Improvers 1. You’ll recap all the salsa essentials while developing your technical skills and confidence with a partner: Review of the basic steps, moves, rhythm & Musicality Understand the fundamentals of salsa leading & following Growing the vocabulary of the shines & footworks through warm up Learn partner work combinations: Cross body turn, checks in Cross body lead, Titanic, Caresse, Flicks, Open break Become familiar with the Salsa dance community and attend more Salsa nights out As with all of our salsa classes, you'll receive friendly feedback throughout, and you don’t need to bring a partner to join the course. 🎓 Recap the Essentials Refresh your knowledge of salsa basics—steps, common moves, rhythm, and musicality. Reinforce your foundation while gaining more control and precision in your dancing. ⚙️ Lead and Follow Skills Deepen your understanding of how salsa works with a partner. Learn to give and respond to signals clearly, improving your communication and connection on the dance floor. 🙂 Expand Footwork & Shines Explore a wider range of solo footwork during warm-up. Build confidence, style, and musical timing through more expressive shines that complement your partner work. 🔀 Develop Partner Combinations Work on more complex partner moves: cross body turn, checks in cross body lead, Titanic, Caresse, Flicks, and open break. Each pattern builds on what you already know. UNDERSTANDING OUR SALSA & BACHATA CURRICULUM Salsa and bachata are beautifully rich dances, full of technique, musicality, and finesse and like any true art form, they take time to develop and refine. Each course within our curriculum is designed to be repeated, often more than once. You’ll work closely alongside your peers and your tutor, who will guide you in mastering every element of the material. When you’re ready, you’ll receive a sign-off to progress to the next level, ensuring a solid and confident foundation at every stage. To support your learning, our bi-monthly afternoon Salsa Social is a friendly, welcoming, and safe space where you can practise what you’ve learned in class, build confidence on the dance floor, and most importantly, have fun. Think of salsa as a marathon, not a sprint. There’s no rush, the joy is in the journey, slow and steady, with lots of smiles along the way. Our role is to guide you and inspire you.
