Over four consecutive weeks, from Monday to Friday, you’ll train with a team of specialist tutors — all of whom are professional actors and facilitators with real-world screen experience. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Throughout the course, you’ll work individually and collaboratively on a range of exciting projects, developing practical skills essential for success on screen: Character Development - Learn how to create believable, compelling characters through emotional depth, objectives, and backstory work. Script Analysis - Break down scripts to uncover subtext, motivation, and rhythm, allowing you to deliver authentic performances. Composition and Blocking for Camera - Master the art of positioning and movement on set to enhance storytelling and ensure your performance fits the frame. Voice and Movement for Screen - Train your voice and body for subtle, controlled screen performances, developing presence, stillness, and vocal clarity. Responding to Direction - Build the ability to quickly and confidently adapt to feedback and direction from filmmakers on set. Audition Preparation and Technique - Prepare for both self-taped and in-person auditions, learning how to make a lasting impression and secure roles. 🎓 TRAINING 4 weeks, full time (Mon - Fri). WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE ON THE SCREEN ACTING FOUNDATION COURSE Throughout the course, you’ll engage in a comprehensive programme designed to build your screen acting skills from the ground up, supported by real-world industry experience. You will take part in the following: 1 Fundamental Vocal and Movement Techniques Learn how to use your voice and body effectively for the camera. Develop physical and vocal stillness, expressive control, and the ability to adjust your performance for different shot types, from intimate close-ups to dynamic wide shots. You'll practise breathing techniques, vocal modulation, and subtle movement work, helping you create powerful, truthful performances across genres. 2 Creative Character Development and Text Analysis Deepen your understanding of character through practical exercises based on leading practitioners such as Stanislavski, Meisner, and Uta Hagen. You’ll learn how to build authentic backstories, emotional objectives, and psychological realism, enabling you to inhabit characters with honesty and precision. 3 Professional Headshot Session Take part in a professional portrait shoot with an experienced industry photographer. You'll receive an industry-standard headshot — an essential marketing tool for casting sites, agents, and auditions — styled to reflect your casting type and personal brand. 4 Playing Subtext and Creating Believable Performances Develop the essential skill of identifying and playing subtext — the hidden emotions and intentions beneath dialogue — to bring greater depth, realism, and nuance to your screen performances. Learn how to communicate story and emotion even when saying very little. 5 Practical Introduction to the Audition Process Gain hands-on experience in auditioning for film, television, and commercials. Learn how to prepare sides (audition scenes), manage nerves, and adapt your delivery to suit different genres and screen styles. 6 Perfecting the Solo Self-Tape Master the self-tape process — now a crucial part of the casting world. Learn how to prepare strong, professional tapes that showcase your strengths on screen, with tips on lighting, framing, technical setup, and performance technique. 7 Masterclass and Q&A with a Casting Director Gain rare insider insight from a professional casting director. Understand what casting directors look for, what makes a memorable audition, and how to make the best impression in self-tapes and in-person auditions. Ask questions and receive practical advice based on years of industry experience. 8 Masterclass and Q&A with an Acting Agent Learn how to conduct yourself professionally on set, understanding the different roles of a film crew, the correct terminology, and how to work efficiently and respectfully in a production environment. This crucial training will prepare you for working confidently on professional sets. 9 Collaborative Short Film Project Apply everything you have learned by taking part in a professionally filmed short film project, working in pairs to maximise your screen time. Directed and filmed by a professional crew using industry-standard equipment, your short film will be edited and delivered to you within 2–4 weeks — perfect for showreels, agent submissions, and building your portfolio. DARREN TIGHE Darren's performances include his role as Dean in series ‘Cracker’, Darren in series ‘Goldplated’ as well as his performances on many TV series such as Touch of Frost, Casualty and Midsomer Murders Reusable Rob Ostlere has extensive experience on screen, including Restless (BBC), Game of Thrones (HBO), a regular award-winning role in BBC’s Holby City, and upcoming appearances in I Hate Suzie (Sky/Bad Wolf) and the movie Infinite (Paramount). Previewable Victoria has appeared in numerous television commercials and in sketches on Channel 4 and Channel 5, and projects on Radio 2 and Radio 4. Her stage credits include west end performances at The Aldwych Theatre and The Bloomsbury Theatre. USEFUL INFORMATION 1 Who is this course suitable for? This course is open to everyone — from beginners to those with some acting experience looking to develop their screen skills. You don't need previous training or professional experience to join. 2 Do I need to audition to join? No audition is required. All students are welcome! Simply book your place online — early booking is recommended as spaces fill quickly. 3 What does the daily schedule look like? The course runs Monday to Friday over four consecutive weeks. Each day includes a full programme of acting classes, project work, filming sessions, and industry-led masterclasses. Expect a fast-paced, professional environment that mirrors the demands of real film and TV production. 4 Will I receive a professional headshot? Yes. As part of the course, you’ll participate in a headshot session with a professional photographer. Your headshot will be industry-standard, perfect for casting profiles, agent submissions, and promotional use. 5 What is included in the final film project? In the final two weeks, you’ll work with your classmates on a collaborative short film project, filmed on location with a professional crew. The finished film (approximately 10 - 15 minutes) will be delivered to you within 2–4 weeks of course completion — a valuable addition to your showreel. 6 Can I use the final film for my showreel? Yes — and many students do! Your short film is ideal for agent submissions, casting applications, and marketing yourself professionally in the industry. 7 What additional support do I receive during the course? You’ll benefit from ongoing personal feedback, practical screen projects, workshops on industry etiquette, and exclusive masterclasses with professional casting directors and acting agents. 8 Where is the course held? Training takes place at City Academy’s central London studios, with location shoots happening at various London sites. 9 What should I bring with me? Wear comfortable clothes suitable for movement work, and bring a notebook, water bottle, and any necessary personal items. All scripts and filming equipment are provided. 10 Is there homework or extra practice required? Yes. Students are encouraged to continue learning outside of class by rehearsing scenes, learning lines, researching roles, and preparing for filmed projects. Extracurricular practice will enhance your progress throughout the course. 11 Are there payment options available? City Academy courses are self-funded, but flexible payment plans are available. Regular course footage will be watched in class and you will receive live feedback notes from your tutor. This regular footage is for educational purposes only and will not be made available.
